INSPIRATION

The wonders of the natural world and the nature of human beings have always intrigued me.

As a child I was surrounded by the natural world. With a lake in my front yard, forests, and open fields on the other sides, I spent much time wandering, exploring, and immersed in the outdoor world. Those early experiences were imprinted in my senses and memory. Now as an adult I continue to enjoy as much time forest bathing as time allows. It is a time of contemplation, creative thought, and a respite from the demands and chatter of everyday life that dull the senses. The natural world soothes the soul and arouses senses that have been heightened and honed by those early memories.

Psychology became my career choice, providing a rich opportunity for emotional intimacy in both therapeutic and personal relationships, adding another dimension to the sensory experiences from childhood. Over time complex layers are created and woven into a tapestry of self. With no overt intention that tapestry is expressed in creative pursuits. A work of art evolves from and reveals deeply complex, personal and communal layers of the human psyche.

While I have often created realist paintings, abstract art is my preferred mode of expression, providing an opportunity for intellectual pursuit and expression of life’s journey. The viewer may observe reflections of nature and joy of life in my art but also may reach into and touch their personal tapestry or life story. A piece of art is successful when it engages another soul.
